tautegory In Apocalypse Now(1979), sound designer Walter Murch synthesized artificial mosquito sounds in scenes in the Vietnamese jungle in order to create unease in the audience. Nth takes this idea and runs with it. It's unnerving tiny sounds - subverting comforts like insect chirps, fire crackles or old vinyl - exemplify the immense power even the smallest sounds can have on our psyche.

Z.e.l.l.e is the project, founded early 2000, of Italian duo of Maurizio Martusciello and Nicola Catalano, both of whom reside in Rome. Their debut cd nth is a collection of points strewn across an implied graph of a sound field; delicate crackles, clean sine waves and sibilant washes create a mechanical room tone of deliberate precision. z.e.l.l.e’s use of a transparent and airy sound palette make nth a highly contemplative and listenable study of sound and space.

I regularly imbibe pure frequency-substance from Mr. Chartier, having collected a number of his recordings, and this is one of my favorite ones. So lyrical and...apt... are all the little parts and pieces. Everything has never been in this much of a right place. Considered sound, concise statement, well-met communique. One of those special records that is just as much music as it isn't, and continues to be there for me when disconnection is paramount. Thank you, Mr. Chartier. Tom Rimshot
